Within the quiet walls of the Regional Haven for Women (RHW), where pain turns into strength, lives the story of Mildred Selma, a survivor who found hope, courage, and a second chance.

Before finding refuge at RHW, Mildred endured years of hardship. She lived at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Manila for two years caring for her ailing son, sustaining their needs by selling food and goods within the hospital. Behind this struggle, she also suffered psychological and physical abuse from her former partner, surviving two attempted rapes.

Seeking safety, she was referred to DSWD Field Office X’s RHW, where she stayed for three years. Her stay became a turning point, not only for her but also for her children. With DSWD’s help, she rescued her eldest son from an abusive nanny and supported his recovery through therapy.

During her stay, Mildred faced another heartbreak, the loss of her youngest child. She recalls with gratitude how RHW staff stood by her, offering comfort and assistance during her darkest days.

“The RHW became my home. The staff are like family who supported me emotionally, physically, and spiritually,” she shares.

At RHW, Mildred gained new skills in caregiving, bookkeeping, and customer service, empowering her to rebuild her life after reintegration. She now advocates for parental vigilance, reminding parents to stay attentive to their children’s well-being.

Today, Mildred stands as a testament to the transformative power of compassion and resilience, proof that with the right support, healing and new beginnings are possible. ###
