Life seemed perfect for Juana (pseudonym). She had a complete family, a comfortable home, and dreams of a bright future with her children. But behind what appeared to be a happy life was a painful reality. Her husband’s infidelity shattered everything she had built, leaving her to face one of the most difficult chapters of her life.

Naturally shy and reserved, Juana never imagined herself fighting a legal battle. Yet, for the sake of her children, she found the courage to seek justice.

When she uncovered her husband’s affair, Juana endured psychological abuse that left deep emotional scars. Instead of receiving honesty and support, she was subjected to emotional manipulation and distress while trying to hold her family together.

For an entire year, she quietly gathered evidence of her husband’s unfaithfulness. She even hired private investigator, investing her time, finances, and emotional strength into documenting the truth. She kept her struggle to herself, not even her parents or closest friends knew what she was enduring. Despite the pain, she remained composed until she had enough evidence to file an administrative case against her husband in their national office.

The long process took its toll. Physically, emotionally, and financially drained, Juana realized she needed more than justice, she needed a safe place where she and her children could begin again.

In May 2023, Juana and her children were admitted to the Regional Haven for Women after referral by the Local Government Unit. Initially worried about how they would survive, she was relieved to learn that the center would provide their basic needs, including shelter, food, medical services, counseling, and livelihood training.

More than the assistance, the center gave Juana something she had almost lost—peace of mind.

Through counseling sessions, guidance from social workers, and the support of houseparents and fellow residents, she gradually regained her confidence and found the strength to continue pursuing her case.

“Nakarelax nako ug makahunahuna na og tarong katong naa nami sa center,” Juana recalled.

Her stay at the center also became an opportunity to rebuild her future. Although she had no experience in baking before, she discovered a passion for it through the center’s livelihood training. She also learned manicure and pedicure services and handicraft making. Her dedication soon earned her recognition as one of the center’s outstanding bakers, known for her carrot cakes, banana cakes, cupcakes, and banana loaves.

While Juana focused on rebuilding her life, her children continued their education with the center closely monitoring their welfare and academic progress, ensuring that they, too, were supported throughout the healing process.

Eventually, Juana and her husband entered into a plea bargaining agreement after he expressed remorse and offered a settlement. She was awarded a percentage of his salary, ownership of their family home, and a family lot. The agreement also ensured that her husband could no longer apply for loans without her approval, providing additional protection for her and their children.

After months of rehabilitation, Juana was successfully reintegrated into the community. Armed with the skills she acquired at the center, she now earns a living through home baking and making traditional Filipino delicacies. She also reopened her sari-sari store, helping provide a stable source of income for her family.

Today, Juana is not only a successful home-based entrepreneur but also a stronger and more empowered mother. While she has chosen to forgive her husband, she remains fully aware of her rights and confident in her ability to stand on her own.

Looking back, Juana believes that God’s guidance carried her through her darkest moments. The life she once thought was perfect may have fallen apart, but from its broken pieces emerged a woman defined not by betrayal, but by courage, resilience, and hope. ###
