At sixteen, Alkia made a decision she thought was harmless, driven by curiosity, influence from a friend, and the pressures of poverty. She became involved in human trafficking. Though it happened only once, she never imagined that her past would resurface two years later, and change her life forever.

One seemingly ordinary day exposed her past, turning her world upside down. For her safety, social workers referred Alkia to the Regional Haven for Women, alongside other victim-survivors. What she expected to be a brief, one-month stay soon became several months of healing, learning, and self-discovery.

It was her first time away from home, her first time in an unfamiliar environment. With no family contact, no cellphone, and fear overwhelming her, Alkia struggled with loneliness and uncertainty. Yet, the warm welcome from the center gradually became a source of comfort. She learned new livelihood skills, participated in activities that nurtured her emotional well-being, and continued her education with guidance from the staff. Encouragement from both her family and the center fueled her determination to move forward.

Every session, every skill learned, every supportive conversation helped Alkia rebuild her confidence. The experience equipped her with resilience and strength, teaching her that her past did not have to define her future.

Upon reintegration with her family, Alkia felt a mix of emotions, joy to be home, and sadness at leaving the staff and fellow clients she had bonded with. Using the skills she gained at the center, she started a small business selling mango float and pastries to support her schooling. Her perseverance paid off. In July 2025, she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.

Today, Alkia helps manage her family’s small business, applying the lessons, skills, and resilience she gained from her journey to contribute to their livelihood and future.

Alkia’s journey is a testament to the power of courage, guidance, and determination. It proves that the choices we make when we are young, no matter how difficult or misguided, do not define our destiny. With support and the willingness to grow, every painful decision can transform into a powerful new beginning. ###
