The Philippines is one of the fastest-growing human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemics in the Asia-Pacific region with over 131,000 people living with HIV (PLHIV), according to the Department of Health (DOH). In Northern Mindanao, 436 new cases were reported from January to August 2023, with most cases involving males aged 15–34.
With the alarming cases in Region 10, the Department of Social Welfare and Development Field Office 10 (DSWD 10) provides financial assistance for education, livelihood, medical needs, transportation, food, and funeral expenses to PLHIV and their families.
These efforts aim to reduce the impact of HIV and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and improve the well-being of affected individuals. The psychosocial care and support services are DSWD’s contribution to the government’s strategies to prevent, diagnose, and treat HIV.
On December 1, 2024, DSWD 10 commemorated World AIDS Day with the theme “Take the Rights Path” at Pedro “Oloy” N. Roa Senior High School, Cagayan de Oro City.
The event gathered Grade 9 to 12 students and key partners, including the Cagayan de Oro City Health Office (CHO), Department of Education Region 10, Pilipinas Shell Foundation’s PROTECTS UPSCALE, Sangguniang Kabataan of Barangay Canitoan, and LGBTQ++ Canitoan.
Dr. Ronald A. Romano of CHO provided an orientation on sexually transmitted infections (STIs), HIV, and AIDS, equipping students with knowledge and encouraging safe practices.
Meanwhile, Ms. Sweetzhyl E. Sayson of DSWD 10 presented available support programs for PLHIV, emphasizing the importance of community care.
Additionally, CHO and PROTECTS UPSCALE offered free counseling and testing services, empowering students to take proactive steps in managing their health.
Looking ahead, on December 12, 2024, DSWD 10 will further strengthen its efforts with STI, HIV, and AIDS orientations, voluntary counseling sessions, and distributing free testing kits in partnership with DOH 10.
World AIDS Day 2024 reinforced the need to uphold the rights and dignity of all individuals, paving the way for a future free from the burden of HIV-related stigma and inequality. ###
