Data from the 11th to 13th cycles of DSWD-10 Supplementary Feeding Program (SFP) reveals that stunting is the leading indicator of malnutrition in Northern Mindanao. The result was presented during the Consultation Dialogue with Nutrition Action Officers, on October 16-17, 2024, at Malberry Suites, Cagayan de Oro City.

This data was gathered through anthropometric assessments—height-for-age and weight-for-age measurements—conducted before the start of each feeding cycle in collaboration with Child Development Workers and Barangay Nutrition Secretaries.

While the SFP has successfully reduced other forms of malnutrition, such as wasting and underweight, stunting remains widespread.

Stunting, a irreversible effect of malnutrition, must be addressed during the first 1,000 days of life—from pregnancy through a child’s second birthday.

In response to these findings, the SFP provides nutrition education to the mothers of its beneficiaries and prepares individualized Nutrition Care Plans to support them.

Additionally, there are programs targeting child stunting that are anchored in Republic Act No. 11148, or the “Kalusugan at Nutrisyon ng Mag-Nanay Act.”

One such initiative that the Department will be launching in 2025 is the First 1,000 Days (F1KD) conditional cash grant, which will be integrated into the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps).

The F1KD cash grant will offer additional financial support under the 4Ps, specifically aimed at assisting pregnant 4Ps beneficiaries and households with children aged 0 to 2 years.

Currently, the conditionalities for the F1KD grant have been inked for approval as the nutrition-specific additional grant gears toward full implementation in 2025. ###
