The MAPULOG CLUSTER 5 Sustainable Livelihood Program Association (SLPA), located in Purok 5, Barangay Mapulog, Naawan, Misamis Oriental, stands as a beacon of community-led development and economic resilience. As a recipient of a seed capital fund amounting to ₱250,000, the association launched a rice wholesale and retail livelihood project that has not only thrived over the past six years but also evolved into a dynamic enterprise that reflects the community’s determination and adaptability.
Initially designed to address the basic staple needs of the community, the rice retailing project became a cornerstone of Barangay Mapulog’s economic activity. Driven by a vision of sustainability and growth, the SLPA saw an opportunity to diversify. They expanded their operations by introducing Agrivet products, such as feeds and vitamins for pigs and chickens, broadening their services to support local farmers and livestock raisers. This strategic expansion increased their market reach and strengthened the resilience of their operations amid changing demands.
Even during the challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, the SLPA stood strong. Rather than folding under pressure, they became a source of hope and support within their barangay. Demonstrating their commitment to community service, they initiated a heartfelt gesture by sharing a portion of their rice stock with loyal customers who lost their jobs or experienced temporary business closures. This act of compassion, funded through their profits, served as a “give-back” initiative to the very community that sustained them.
Additionally, the SLPA served as a reliable local channel where members and nearby residents could access essential goods such as rice and livestock feeds during the height of lockdowns. With limited mobility and income, many found refuge in the SLPA’s presence, which offered a lifeline right within their reach. This effort not only provided immediate relief but also strengthened the bond among members and the wider community, reinforcing the SLPA as a pillar of support during trying times. The pandemic, rather than weakening their organization, became a catalyst that further solidified their unity and purpose.
What sets the MAPULOG CLUSTER 5 SLPA distinct from other organizations is their strong financial stewardship and collective accountability. Through careful planning and responsible management, the group successfully recovered their initial seed capital grant. The profits from their rice and agrivet businesses were wisely deposited into their depository savings account, laying a solid foundation for financial stability. This milestone allowed them to transition smoothly into a second cycle of financial assistance, reinforcing their commitment to uplifting the socio-economic well-being of their members.
A pivotal innovation in their journey was the establishment of a revolving fund, enabling each member to access ₱10,000 as capital for personal livelihood ventures. Designed for sustainability and affordability, members are required to repay ₱500 monthly over two years, totaling ₱12,000. This initiative has sparked a wave of entrepreneurship, empowering members to start or grow their own small businesses and contributing to a vibrant local economy.
Their continued success owes much to the unwavering support and technical guidance of the Field Implementing Project Development Officers (PDOs). From the SLPA’s inception to its ongoing operations, these dedicated professionals have provided essential training, conducted regular monitoring, and offered timely solutions to operational and financial challenges. Issues such as inactive members, attendance gaps in monthly meetings, or miscommunication in financial reporting were addressed through targeted interventions, reinforcing cohesion and transparency within the association.
Moreover, their proactive engagement with a non-government organization (NGO) has opened doors to further growth. This partnership helped facilitate their journey toward registration with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) through free participation in technical trainings and workshops, many of which emphasize women’s empowerment. Additional support from the Barangay Council, the Local Government Unit (LGU), and private partners enriched their knowledge in business development and gender and development (GAD), further reinforcing their holistic approach to community progress.
The story of the MAPULOG CLUSTER 5 SLPA is not just one of economic success but of empowered individuals, resilient leadership, and a community that thrives through unity and vision. Their journey is a shining example of what can be achieved when grassroots initiatives are guided by sustainable practices, inclusive participation, and unwavering commitment to a better future.
